Use Mindfulness to Boost Workplace Creativity

Wed May 21 2014
By:Tom Shaw

Creativity in the workplace is often underestimated. Sure, some people will just come in and go through their daily routine, never changing things up even in the slightest. However, I have discovered the importance of creativity and innovation over the years, not just because it can make you a better person but because it can make you much happier and feeling more innovative. This can benefit you both at the office as well as outside of the office.

Believe it or not, mindfulness meditation can be an outstanding way to relieve stress and ultimately boost your creativity. This is important to keep in mind because when you're stressed about anything, you won't be as creative or motivated to accomplish the tasks that are put in front of you. With that said, I had a friend recommend meditation to me, and I'll be honest - at first, I was skeptical about it. I wasn't overly enthusiastic about it because I assumed that the perceived benefits were a little over-exaggerated.

But I was wrong.

Here are a few key benefits of mindfulness meditation that I would like to share with you:
  1. Reduce your stress levels: I can't stress enough (no pun intended) how important this is to do, not even just for your creativity levels but for your mind. It's been shown recently that not only will you feel less stressed from meditating, but it's also been connected with having decreased levels of the stress hormone known as cortisol.
  2. Improve your mental health: Mindfulness meditation is outstanding when it comes to improving your mental health. It is considered helpful as a treatment for various conditions, including but not limited to depression, substance abuse, anxiety, and even obsessive-compulsive disorder, to name a few. One benefit that I've found personally through mindfulness meditation is that it teaches me to not just sit there and worry about my problems. Instead, it teaches me to accept what the problems are, to take them step by step, and to remember, "I can get through this."
  3. Improve relationships and get ideas: These two go hand-in-hand with another, and it's good because mindfulness meditation can help strengthen social relationships with family, friends, and acquaintances. Simply put (and I've found this to be true),with reduced stress and anxiety levels, mindfulness meditation can help you open up a little bit more and be more social. Because of this, creativity can spark because you're meeting new people, feeding off of their ideas, and inspiring one another.

I've seen incredible benefits from practicing mindfulness meditation, and if you haven't tried it, then I suggest you give it a shot. By doing this, like me, you will improve your physical and mental health, which will put you more at ease and reduce your stress levels. As a result, you will see that you are more motivated, inspired, and creative, which are all elements that you can use to not only enhance your career but to enhance your life as a whole.
